Even if you haven’t said boo to non-alcoholic Halloween drinks in the past, this season may be a little different. You might be surprised when you see just how festive these liquor-free options are—the perfect addition to your next Halloween party.

No matter where you live in the world, Halloween signals the changing of the seasons—and with that, a fresh chance to consider your drinks menu. And this year, it looks like the trends are changing.

Noticed how not drinking has become the new drinking? We’re all familiar with lifestyle pages lavishing praise on the latest darlings of the alcohol world. But recently things are getting, well, a little shaken up. (Even TIME magazine thinks so.)

From non-alcoholic wines to fun Halloween mocktails, don’t get a fright if there’s a little less vodka in the average witches' brew this year.

And there are so many good reasons for cutting back. You’ll sleep better, think better, and have more energy, all while enjoying more time and money to pour into your favourite Halloween costume. Plus, in the long term, you're decreasing your risk of all sorts of health conditions, from cancer to heart disease to high blood pressure.

Of course, this also means that you can now enjoy your favourite Halloween drink with your kids.

So hop on to our broomstick. We’re off to take a whirlwind tour around our unlucky list of 13 favourites.

13 Non alcoholic Halloween drinks

Non-alcoholic beer

It’s no secret that the non-alcoholic beer market is booming. From the big companies to local craft enterprises, breweries are waking up to what their customers are after—and that’s a little less booze in their beer. (Check out this article in Forbes. And this one in the Business Insider. Things are changing around here.)

And the good news is, they’re getting oh-so-good at it. That means you don’t have to skimp on taste just because you’re reducing the booze. Here are our top hits for Halloween:

  • Living dead lager. This old staple of the beer industry is crisp, clean, sweet, and refreshing.

  • Scary stout. Come to the dark side with flavours of chocolate, coffee and molasses.

  • *Sigh*PA. This one is all about the hops. It’s bitter, citrusy, earthy—and yes, bitter.

  • Wizardy witbier. For a magic potion of herbal notes, look no further. Spicy, peppery, citrusy goodness.

Non-alcoholic cider

Hot apple cider. While non-alcoholic version of craft ciders are on their way up, we’ve chosen to feature this Halloween classic. If you find yourself in the northern hemisphere, fall is the perfect time to jump into this delicious drink. It will warm your insides quicker than the biggest fright.

Here’s an easy recipe that makes a dozen cups of hot cider:

  • 12 cups of apple cider

  • ½ cup maple

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Cloves

  • Nutmeg

  • Pepper

  • Orange peels

  • Lemon peels

Bring your brew to the boil and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. How do you like them apples?

Non-alcoholic cocktails

Now it’s time to whip up your witches’ brew with these Halloween punch recipes. But this time without the vodka. Get that punch bowl out because things are about to get stirred up in this pot.

These are our favourite non-alcoholic cocktails. These drink recipes are easy to make and filled with all the magic of the most potent potions.

  • Blood curdling vampire punch. It's simple to get your scare on with this terrifyingly tasty variation of variation of Dragon's Blood punch.

Mix up cherry juice (or cranberry juice, if you prefer), fresh ginger and cinnamon. And now for the secret ingredient: candied fangs. With them floating around in that bloody mixture, you’re sure to give your guests their favourite fright ever.

  • Slimy stew. This 3 ingredient Halloween punch is as creepy as the name suggests. And while it sounds like a concoction you wouldn’t want to go near, it’s actually devilishly delicious. The key ingredient? Gummy worms. (Yep, at Halloween, adults are allowed to be kids again.) Mix together ginger ale and orange juice and then unleash the worms. Add some shaved ice for some extra sparkle.

  • Smokin’ Spook. This one’s a real crowd pleaser—and it all has to do with using dry ice. You’ll need apple cider, pineapple juice, pumpkin puree (to give it that gooey texture), spices, simple syrup, and dry ice. Heat the ingredients together and add dry ice at the end. Watch the smoke rise.

  • Haunting hot choc. As the weather turns, those cravings for that warm, hot cocoa goodness might start to kick in. Spice up your traditional hot chocolate recipe by adding the flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg and—if you’re feeling really courageous—some chilli flakes. Of course, it’s imperative that you top it all off with some whipped cream. Obviously. A nice touch? Some edible eyes perched hauntingly in your hot cocoa.

  • Shirley Temple’s Gone Rogue. You know the old classic cocktail? It’s pretty much grenadine and sprite. Give it a Halloween makeover with some expert glassware usage. Put the grenadine in a test tube, the sprite in a larger one and watch as your guest’s play Frankenstein in your lab.

Unique drinks

And because Halloween is all about the pageantry, here are some other ways to dress your drinks up with a splash of colour.

  • Black Halloween drinks: non alcoholic: Looking to make a witches’ brew as dark as the longest night? Here’s how: the darkest grape juice you can find, ginger ale and sugar to taste. Want to have some extra fun with it? Float some candy spiders in the mix to up your terror game.

  • Green Halloween drinks: non alcoholic: For a drink that looks greener than a witch’s toad, you’ll want a lemon (or lime depending on your taste preference) powdered drink mix. Mix in some pineapple juice and add some lemonade and/or ginger ale for fizz.

  • Purple Halloween drinks: non alcoholic: The secret ingredient here is hibiscus tea. It’s sure to turn your concoction the shade you desire for maximum scare. Add some juice (orange and pineapple work well) and some spice (cloves and ginger are good) and sweeten to taste.

Have a frightfully fun Halloween.
